Living In Calgary : Sakana Grill (Vine and Dine Style)
Last night we had an evening out with a new twist. I heard about www.vineanddine.ca online and was very intrigued. Here's the just of what we did. We showed up at Sakana Grill and were greeted by Linda Garson, owner and host of Vine and Dine. We sat down with a group of 20 or so people and we were given a small portion of a dish that Sakana Grill serves along with a wine pairing that goes best with that dish... We LOVED IT! What a fabulous evening out! Below is my favorite dish and wine from the night along with its pairing.

As well, Sakana Grill is a great sushi restaurant that is focusing on Fusion Sushi. With their creativity and top chef's you are sure to enjoy this restaurant. They have two existing and a new location opening soon. Currently they are in Crowfoot and Downtown with a new location opening up on MacLeod Trail. If you know where Campers Village is and where the McDonalds used to be, they will be occupying the location of the McDonalds soon.
KYOTO TACO (Lightly grilled tuna, lettuce, tomato & cucumber in a home made taco shell with avocado sauce, sweet & spicy sauce)
What I loved about this dish was that the taco isn't a typical mexican style taco, rather it's a in house made won-ton taco shell. This to me was the best dish. Between the texture and taste of the won-ton shell along with grilled tuna (my favorite) made this a fabulous Tuna Taco!
To my surprise, this dish was paired with the Sutter Home White Zinfandel (apx. $10.49 for a bottle). Why I say to my surprise, it's simply that I was surprised that I liked the Rose wine. I am not a Rose fan, but this wine paired with the tuna was fabulous.
I'm a big fan of a good red wine and we have found a very reasonable priced but yet amazing Merlot. The Cono Sur Merlot paired with the beef strip loin was amazing. Espceially considering that this wine is under $10.00 in most stores this is a great find and yes it's from Chile.
As this is a completely ORGANIC wine, this also made it a better buy and wine in my opinion. In Chile and on this winery in order to not use pesticides they use mother nature to fight of predators. Example: The winery has beetles which will climb the stems of the vines and ruin the grapes. How they battle this is they wrap a linen around the base, have it covered with honey and stuff around the linen with Garlic. The beetles will start to climb the stem, get stuck in the honey and here's the kicker, Geese will then come in and be attracted by the garlic which in turn love eating beetles! CRAZY!
This is a great find and a great wine. Now with the pairing we had the QQ Beef from Sakana Grill. A great dish indeed. They have their own special steak sauce that you can buy separate that is really good. It's not where I would think of picking up steak sauce from a Japanese restaurant, but I'd buy it! The QQ Beef is cubed medium rare beef strip loin, topped with sesame sauce and sprinkled with baked sesame seeds.
